SINTERING

What is sintering?

Sintering of metals is a crucial step in the powder metallurgy process.
The pressed pieces, also called “green parts”, are conveyed into the sintering furnaces and brought to a temperature below the melting point of the metals used.
In this way, the metal particles join together, forming compact, resistant and ready-to-use sintered parts.

The sintering time and temperature vary depending on the powder mix used – such as steel, iron, bronze or tungsten – and the desired physical-mechanical characteristics.

The three phases of sintering

1️⃣ De-binding (or de-waxing) phase
The mechanical part is heated until the lubricants in the powder mixture evaporate. This step is essential to ensure a uniform, impurity-free structure.

2️⃣ Sintering phase
The component reaches the process temperature, during which the porosity is reduced and the density increases.
This results in a compact and stable piece, with dimensions very similar to the final ones envisaged by the project.

3️⃣ Controlled cooling phase
The sintered part is gradually cooled to room temperature, preserving its mechanical and structural properties before being removed from the furnace.

What are the advantages of sintering?

The sintering process allows the creation of complex metal components with geometries that are difficult to achieve using traditional techniques such as forging, casting, or turning.
Every detail is born from a customized design phase, studied according to the customer's specific needs, thus guaranteeing tailor-made performance and maximum dimensional precision.

Compared to other forming processes, metal sintering drastically reduces post-production processing, resulting in energy savings and less material waste.
It is a clean and sustainable technology, characterized by efficient production phases, low environmental impact and minimal waste.

Furthermore, the possibility of adapting metal alloys allows for the sintered parts to be given specific properties based on the required performance.

Main advantages of metal sintering:

  • Tailor-made services based on the customer's project

  • Isotropic properties and structural uniformity

  • Noise and vibration reduction

  • Possibility of obtaining magnetic properties

  • Excellent surface finish

  • High repeatability in large series production

  • Wear resistance and long life
